For Brightcove Users

Brightcove

bclogoIn February of 2016, Brightcove released its newest video player Version 5.  This new Brightcove Player allows publishers to deliver 100% HTML5 to their audience.  Among other benefits, this means that there is complete independence from Flash.  In order to take advantage of this newer, faster technology, Brightcove requires WebVTT format for all new integrations.   Brightcove is also discontinuing support for other file formats and is encouraging clients to move to the WebVTT format before the end of 2017.

Dotsub supports the new Brightcove Player version 5 and provides the required WebVTT format for all new integrations. We will help you convert to the WebVTT format.  In order to convert the existing captions into the new format, you will need to supply Dotsub with the new Brightcove OAuth credentials from the Brightcove account administration panel.  When you are ready contact us via email at support@doub.com.

On the Dotsub side, we will republish to Brightcove all the links to your old caption and subtitle files in WebVTT format.  How long will it take? It’s usually a matter of a few minutes, but the length of time will depend on many factors such as volume and web traffic. The set-up is completely automated and does not require any human intervention.

If you have any question or concerns, please email support@dotsub.com.

Britta Schellenberg: Can you tell us a little about yourself, both personally and professionally?

Marcus Sheridan: I think it’s important for the PLAY audience to know I speak from the standpoint of a business owner myself. In 2001, I started my first business, River Pools and Spas, installing swimming pools out of the back of a pickup truck. Today, River Pools is the most trafficked swimming pool website in the world, and we now have dealers installing pools all over the country. Anything I recommend to my audience is generally something I’ve done before, so I’ve been there before, just like them.

The success I had with River Pools allowed me to speak with other brands and businesses in an effort to help them leverage digital. Today, I’m a partner at IMPACT, a digital media company that teaches, trains, and offers inbound marketing services to clients around the globe. Over the last two years, my team and I have been obsessed with teaching companies how to create a culture of in-house video. With PLAY, I’m incredibly excited to show everyone what we’ve learned during this time and how we’ve lessened the learning curve for success.

Britta: You’ll be leading a three-part workshop at PLAY this year. What can people expect?

MS: There are three essential goals of this workshop. (1) I want attendees to see the link between video and sales. It’s critical for people to learn the types of videos to use in order to move the sales needle forward. (2) I also want attendees to realize there’s no such thing as a “secret sauce” when it comes to video success. Instead of hiding your process, it’s important to show more of what you do and be recognized as a trusted voice within your space. I’ll show how companies are producing these types of transparent, educationally-oriented videos to massive success. And (3) I want attendees to understand what it takes to create and maintain a video culture, not just treating it as a tool to be used on occasion. This includes engaging your sales team and other subject matter experts in the video production process.

Britta: Since this is a workshop, will there be information people can take home? Can we expect some exercises or audience involvement?

MS: My obsession as a speaker always comes back to the audience. If they only attend and laugh and get excited, I really haven’t accomplished anything. But if they do those things and apply what they’ve learned to their business, then they’ll get results. So yes, you’ll want to come with your mind open, ready to engage and think. You’ll leave with dozens of ideas, guaranteed, and you’ll realize how much more video you could be doing. More importantly, you’ll learn how to utilize video in creative ways to achieve great growth and results.

Britta: I believe this is your first time at PLAY. Besides your workshop, will you be attending other sessions and parties? And what are you most looking forward to?

MS: Like everyone, I’m coming to PLAY to learn from the experts. I want to engage with like-minded folks who are working to improve their business and do something great with video. What I’ve found at these events, though, is that the “magic” doesn’t necessarily occur in the sessions; it might happen in a hallway or at a party during an unexpected conversation with someone truly inspiring. That’s when you get that lightbulb moment.

Britta: One final question. Have you ever been to Boston? What would you recommend people do who are visiting for the first time?

MS: I’ve spoken in Boston about 20 times or so, and it’s a great city. For food, I recommend grabbing a local lobster roll. They’re amazing. I also suggest touring some of the historic buildings and churches. The entire city sweats of history—it’s tremendous! And finally, make sure to walk around—don’t Uber everywhere. Get out, breath the city air, see the sights, and take it all in!

PLAY 2018 Speaker Series – Ilya Degtev

Brightcove

Welcome to our second post of the #PLAY2018 speaker blog series! Here, we’ll introduce you to some of our guest speakers and the sessions scheduled for this year’s event. If you’ve already registered to attend, this series will give you a better understanding of what’s in store. If you haven’t registered yet, this series will hopefully inspire you to join us this May!

Ilya Degtev is Brightcove’s Ad Tech Manager and a member of our Customer Success team. Backed with several years’ experience in media advertising, he currently heads the company’s Advertising Health Check program, a solutions-driven initiative that helps small and large companies with advertising strategies. By providing resources like analyses, implementation overviews, and performance optimization suggestions, Ilya ensures customers get the most out of their advertising efforts. At PLAY, he’ll be leading a workshop on ad health that will identify key challenges, offer troubleshooting tips, and show easy-to-deploy solutions for best media advertising practices.

On a more personal note, Ilya left Russia at nine years-old to come to the U.S., all because his parents promised to feed him pizza upon arrival. He’s a long-time fan of writer George R.R. Martin and his fantasy book series, Game of Thrones, and he’s got all but two titles signed by Mr. Martin himself.

Britta Schellenberg: Hi Ilya! Can you tell our PLAY audience a little bit about yourself?

Ilya Degtev: I’m originally from Russia, and to spare you confusion, my name is pronounced like Homer’s Iliad, without the D. I graduated from Tufts University with a history degree in 2010, which naturally led me to the ad tech space! My career began with a small app developer called HeyWire. I helped the company monetize its texting app and squeeze all possible revenue from the ad networks. Prior to Brightcove, I worked at Adelphic, a programmatic DSP recently acquired by Time, Inc. In light of this experience, I sympathize greatly with Brightcove’s publishers in their pursuit of ad revenue. Overall, I love being a part of a relatively new and growing industry and helping our customers find success.

Britta: What can people expect from your workshop at this year’s PLAY event?

ID: During our advertising health checks, one of the most common questions I hear from media customers is, “How do I improve my fill rate?” As with anything in ad tech, this is a simple question with dozens of complicated answers. The goal of the PLAY 2018 workshop is to offer ideas and simple best practices for improving fill rates and getting the most out of one’s ad supported video content.

Britta: Will there be information people can take back home? And can we expect some audience participation?

ID: Definitely! We’ll be offering tips and advice on both internal Brightcove tools and external ad ecosystem best practices. Specifically, users of DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) and interactive media ads (IMA) should find some action items to take home. I’m also hoping to bring a guest speaker on board, and we’ll be opening the floor to questions as well.

Britta: I believe this is your first time at PLAY. Besides your workshop, will you be attending other sessions and parties? What are you looking forward to most?

ID: I really want to attend the OTT sessions, since OTT is a hot topic now with both advertisers and publishers. With stricter requirements and tracking regulations in place, it’s a challenge to successfully monetize those platforms. Still, it’s a gold despot waiting to be mined.

Britta: One final question: since you live in Boston, can you a recommend three things that people should check out while visiting?

ID: In no particular order, I would recommend going to a Celtics game at TD Garden. The Celts are currently one of the top teams in the NBA Eastern Conference, so it’ll definitely be a good game to watch. If visitors have an interest in art and history, I also suggest taking a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts. Lastly, the Freedom Trail is an absolute must. It’s one of the best ways to see all the famous historical sights of Boston, and in May, you may even survive the weather!

If you’re interested in attending Ilya’s workshop on ad health, it will be held on Tuesday May 22nd, starting at 2pm. Bonus points to participants who come bearing pizza or a personal meeting with George R.R. Martin.

PLAY 2018 Speaker Series – James Hamar

Brightcove

Welcome to our third post of the #PLAY2018 speaker blog series. Here, we’ll introduce some of our guest speakers and scheduled sessions for this year’s event. If you’ve already registered to attend, this series will give you a better understanding of what’s in store. If you haven’t yet registered, this series will hopefully inspire you to join us in May!

I recently sat down with James Hamar to chat about about recent changes in video technology, new opportunities for digital storytellers, and creative ways video publishers, broadcasters, and digital marketers can take their content to the next level. He also explains why hardcore music is conspicuously absent from all of Brightcove’s videos.

Before coming onboard as video production manager here at Brightcove, James headed the digital storytelling team at Business Innovation Factory where he developed video content for the likes of The College Board, The Gates Foundation, and many other non-profit public service organizations.

At PLAY 2018, James and fellow Brightcover Jason Oliveira are set to host Creating a Video Production Workflow , a two-hour workshop outlining the process of DIY video production, step by step. From project brief to final delivery, they’ll show you that creating great video doesn’t require a sky-high budget.
